European
Scientific Seminar Series
David
Walters, BSc, MCIM
Director, IMMUGOLD Marketing
Continuing
in a long-standing tradition of providing educational seminars to our
customers as "A company that stands out," DPC conducted a European scientific
seminar tour last November. The seminars took place in six countries and
drew participants from Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the United Kingdom,
Belgium, The Netherlands and Portugal.
The
program featured topics of current scientific interest together with information
on the extensive range of instruments and reagents available from DPC.
Keynote speakers gave presentations on cardiac markers, intraoperative
PTH, PSA, cytokines and diabetes. DPC presenters spoke on anemia, allergy,
HCG, tumor markers, lab automation and new technologies for rapid diagnostics.
Among
the keynote speakers were two renowned experts in the field of cardiac
markers: Dr. Collinson, Head of Chemical Pathology at St. George's Hospital,
London; and Dr. Alan Wu, Director of Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology
at the Department of Pathology, Hartford Hospital, Connecticut, and Professor
of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Collinson's
work on efficient and cost effective triaging of patients through the
appropriate use of troponin measurement is highly regarded. Dr. Alan Wu
has received the American Association of Clinical Chemistry's Outstanding
Speaker Award several times. Both have published extensively.
Dr.
Collinson and Dr. Wu, speaking on different days in different countries,
addressed many issues currently of interest in the field of cardiac biomarker
testing, both in their presentations and during the ensuing discussions
with attendees. Dr. Collinson's presentation covered cTnT vs. cTnI, renal
failure patients, and postoperative troponin measurements. Dr. Wu spoke
on the clinical utility of cardiac troponin in patients with heart disease.
Invited
speakers and DPC personnel also gave quality presentations on a variety
of other topics summarized in the table below.
